Word Fact: The word "alive" is kind of strange when you think about it. We have "life," "living," lifelong," and the like. So why does this one version of the word have an "a" at the beginning? It actually evolved from the term "on life," which in Old English essentially meant "living." This phrase was in use into the 19th century, but over time, the "n" was dropped and the "o" became easier to pronounce as an "a," with the two words being compressed into "alive."
