Etymology

From Middle English gaynsetten, yensetten (also aȝeynesetten (“to oppose”)), equivalent to gain- + set. Cognate with archaic German gegensetzen (“to oppose”) (whence entgegensetzen), German Gegensatz (“opposition”).
